When Colleagues Rarely Get Time Together

When Colleagues Rarely Get Time Together

Case study

When schedules rarely line up, the date you finally agree on tends to be the only one. That was true for the allied health team at a Singapore NGO who came to us for a corporate pickleball team building session. Their date was fixed a few weeks out; they had no backup, and most of the team had never played pickleball before.

In brief: An allied health team at a Singapore NGO booked a corporate pickleball team building session a few weeks before a fixed date they couldn't move. Air-conditioned courts for that slot had thinned out, so we recommended a sheltered indoor court where they had the whole space to themselves. The organiser was open to going without air conditioning, and that trade-off is what kept the date on the calendar. Most of the team was new to pickleball, and they arrived early and eager to learn.

The organiser's brief

Allied health colleagues don't get much overlap in each other's diaries, and when this team finally did, they wanted to spend it doing something together. They'd chosen pickleball because they'd been curious about it for a while and hadn't yet had a reason to try. The organiser came to us with the practical bits: the group size, a central location that could double as the meeting point, and a fixed date and start time with nothing behind it if the workshop couldn't be arranged.

The challenge

Most groups book a pickleball workshop two to three months ahead. This one had a few weeks, and the start time was fixed too, without the hour of leeway some organisers can offer. For that combination of date, hour and central location, most of the air-conditioned courts were already taken.

What we did

So we came back with alternatives that fit the brief: central, within budget, and free at the fixed time. The one that worked was a sheltered indoor court, without air conditioning, that we could reserve just for the group. The organiser was open to trading air conditioning for keeping the date, and that trade-off is what got the session on the calendar.

On the day

They came in one by one, and everyone arrived early. The first to walk in told us they'd been looking forward to this: they'd heard about pickleball for a while and hadn't had a reason to try it until now. By the time the group was complete, it was already spirited and chatty.

Pickleball helps that kind of curiosity along. It's easier to pick up than most racquet sports, with a small court, few rules, and rallies that don't need power to keep going. The session rotates pairings, so people play with colleagues they wouldn't usually spend the workday next to.

If you're planning corporate pickleball team building for your team

Most of the corporate pickleball team building sessions we run look a lot like this one: a team mostly new to the sport, curious about trying it, and short on time to plan. Three things from this booking are worth keeping in mind if you're planning your own.

1

Come with a clear brief

The more we know upfront (group size, preferred location, budget, date and time), the quicker we can pull together courts that fit. This organiser had all four ready at first contact, so we came back with options within days.

2

Flex where you can

On a tight timeline, two things narrow the venue options fastest: a fixed start time and a specific venue feature, most often air conditioning. Being flexible on either one widens the shortlist. Here, dropping air conditioning is what saved the date.

3

Offer date and time options if you have them

This group's date and time were locked, and they had no backup, and it still worked out. Where you can give us a couple of alternatives, though, your odds of landing your first-choice venue go up.

Frequently asked questions

Is pickleball suitable for a team where nobody has played?
Yes. Most of the corporate groups we run are made up mostly of first-time players. The court is small, the rules are few, and the pace works for mixed abilities.

Can you arrange corporate pickleball team building with only a few weeks' notice?
Sometimes. It depends on your date, your start time, and the venue features you need. Get in touch as early as you can, and we will check availability, then come back with options that fit your brief.

What if some of my team can't or don't want to play?
They can sit out or come along as spectators. Pickleball is voluntary and low-impact, and it's common for people who plan to sit it out to change their minds once they've watched a few rallies.

Does the court need to be air-conditioned?
Not necessarily. We propose a sheltered venue by default, and more air-conditioned options are available if your team needs them.

How much of my time does organising this take?
Once you send us the brief, we do the shortlisting, hold the courts for you, and coordinate directly with the venue. Your side is usually a couple of decisions and one payment.
